5 Signs Your Back Pain Shouldn't Be Ignored

Most back pain gets better on its own within a few weeks, and staying gently active is usually more helpful than rest. But sometimes back pain is trying to tell you something more specific — and knowing the difference can save you weeks or months of frustration. Here are five signs it's worth getting a proper assessment.

1. It's lasted more than a couple of weeks without improving

Most simple muscle and joint-related back pain starts easing within 1–2 weeks. If yours has plateaued or isn't trending in the right direction, that's a sign it may need more than time alone.

2. It's affecting your sleep

Pain that wakes you up, or makes it hard to get comfortable at night, often points to inflammation or a specific structure that's irritated — and it's one of the clearest signs people underestimate how much it's actually affecting them.

3. It comes with pain, numbness, or tingling down your leg

This can indicate nerve involvement (often described as sciatica). It's usually very treatable, but benefits from a proper assessment to understand what's driving it rather than guessing.

4. It's limiting things you need to do — work, lifting, walking

If you're modifying your day around your back — avoiding certain movements, cutting activities short, dreading specific tasks — that's a sign it's time to address the cause directly.

5. It keeps coming back

Recurring episodes of back pain often mean the underlying contributing factors (strength, movement patterns, load tolerance) haven't been addressed, even if each individual flare-up settles down.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Most back pain isn't dangerous, but see a GP or A&E urgently if you have back pain along with numbness around the groin or buttocks, loss of bladder or bowel control, or new weakness in both legs — these are rare but can indicate a serious condition needing immediate attention.

What You Can Do in the Meantime

Gentle movement is generally more helpful than prolonged bed rest — short walks, and continuing with light daily activity as much as comfort allows, tend to support recovery better than staying still. If pain is sharp, severe, or not improving as expected, that's the point to get it properly assessed rather than pushing through.
