What Really Happens at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

If you've never had physiotherapy before, not knowing what to expect can be one of the biggest reasons people put off booking. Here's exactly what happens, from walking in the door to walking out with a plan.

Before You Arrive

Wear (or bring) loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the area you're being seen for — for example, shorts for a knee problem, or a vest top for a shoulder issue. If you've had any relevant scans, letters, or surgical protocols, bring these along too.

The Appointment, Step by Step

1. A conversation first

We'll ask about your problem — when it started, what makes it better or worse, how it's affecting your daily life, and what you're hoping to achieve. This is as important as the physical assessment; it shapes everything that follows.

2. A physical assessment

We'll assess movement, strength, and function in the relevant area, and sometimes nearby areas too, since problems often connect. This isn't about finding pain for the sake of it — it's about understanding what's actually going on.

3. A clear explanation

We'll explain what we think is happening, in plain language, and answer any questions — you should leave understanding your problem, not just having been treated for it.

4. A personalised plan

Together, we'll agree a realistic treatment plan and timeline based on your specific situation, rather than a generic package.

5. Treatment on day one, where appropriate

Many first appointments include some hands-on treatment and the start of a home exercise programme, so you're not just leaving with information — you're leaving with a plan already in motion.

Common Questions

Do I need a GP referral? No — you can book directly with us.

How long does the first appointment take? Typically 45–60 minutes, to allow time for a proper assessment rather than rushing.

Will it hurt? Assessment shouldn't cause significant pain — we work within your comfort and always explain what we're doing and why before we do it.
